Manchester United have cleared Rooney to join up with Steve McClaren's squad after he suffered a knock during the Premiership leaders' 4-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

He was caught in the back by Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda and although he tried to run off the knock he was replaced by Louis Saha in the 64th minute.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters after seeing his men restore their six-point lead at the top of the table: "Wayne was injured in a challenge, he was limping about for a bit so I had to take him off. We'll assess him but he may be doubtful for Wednesday."

Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has already pulled out of McClaren's England squad having missed the defeat at home by United after encountering further ankle problems during last week's Carling Cup semi-final defeat at Arsenal.

It is expected that Chelsea skipper John Terry and Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves will play only minor roles at best following their long-term injury problems with Steven Gerrard set to skipper his country for the first time in three years.
