Ryan O'Neal and son trade charges
|LOS ANGELES: RYAN O'NEAL and his son GRIFFIN traded verbal blows through their lawyers, blaming each other for starting a brawl that saw the ageing Love Story star arrested.
Griffin and his pregnant partner JOANNA BERRY held a Press conference with celebrity Los Angeles lawyer Gloria Allred, who read a statement challenging the actor's account of the altercation.
Police were called to O'Neal's home in the exclusive enclave of Malibu and they detained the actor on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm.
The 65-year-old actor said he had fired a warning shot into the air when Griffin, 42, attacked him with a poker. O'Neal said injuries sustained by Berry were caused when his son struck her accidentally.
However, that version of events was challenged by the couple in the statement read by Allred, where O'Neal and Berry were present but did not speak.
"It is important to note that we vigorously reject any assertion that the injuries suffered by Joanna and Griffin were a result of Ryan O'Neal's acting in self-defence," Allred said.
Berry, who is due to give birth next month, needed eight stitches over her eye, suffered a corneal abrasion, blunt head trauma, a broken sinus and lacerations to her face.
Ryan O'Neal's lawyer Mark Werksman hit back in a statement shortly afterwards.
"Ryan O'Neal is the victim and was attacked by his own son, with his own poker," Werksman said. "It's regrettable that Griffin is trying to make a public spectacle out of this family tragedy."
The altercation arose out of an argument concerning O'Neal's other son REDMOND, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a drug problem, Werksman said.
