On March 24, U.S. Embassy Human Rights Officer Patrick Hanish, accompanied by representatives of the Inter-Religious Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Emir Kovacevic and Olivera Jovanovic, met with Foca Mayor Zdravko Krsmanovic to discuss the recent attack by vandals on Foca’s Muslim cemetery and visit the site of the vandalism.
Mayor Krsmanovic and the members of the delegation all agreed that such behavior was encouraged by an atmosphere of mistrust promoted by some irresponsible media reporting and the pursuit of narrow nationalist political agendas. All agreed that promotion of dialogue among people of all ethnicities and beliefs is an important means of building stability.
The delegation was pleased to find that Foca police, acting decisively, had apprehended two suspects on the evening of March 23. The swift and professional police action, coupled with immediate condemnation of the attack by the Foca municipality security council, sent a clear message promoting inter-ethnic tolerance and security for returnees.
